The ski cut through my pants, cut through my suit, and tried to cut through [my VIX]. But it didn't. I wasn't cut.

Second Purchase After Ortho Surgeons Cut off 1st pair

My daughter’s 1st pair of VIX protection pants had to be cut off her after she broke her Tib Fib in Sweden this past fall at a ski camp in Kabdalis. Ski patrol and EMTs were unable to cut her pants off at the hill. The Ortho trauma surgeons even had difficulty cutting them off the hospital so you know they will protect you from sharp ski edges. The most recent pants are so much softer. She no longer has to wear soft lulu lemon pants under as a base layer but there is still plenty of room in her womens xs to wear them if she chooses to do so. I would highly recommend these pants to protect your kids! Victor is great to work with and is very responsive.

Fantastic cut proof layer!

My daughter is in her third year of ski racing and this season we bit the bullet and bought a pair of the Vixx Women’s Comfort Pro bottoms for her. We could not be happier - well worth the investment. I had heard of Vixx, but it seemed pretty expensive, especially given all the other costs piling up with racing. Over the past few years researched cut proof layers exhaustively, but only found a couple decent options. Eventually I bought a pair of bottoms from a reputable 3-letter ski clothing and protection company, but they were apparently like wearing chain mail under her speed suit, so I sent them back and got back to procrastinating while I combed through the hockey industry's cut proof options again, but didn't find anything that provided the protection needed for skiing. This season I rode a chair with a college racer who had witnessed the accident that launched Vixx. He told me he never gets on his skis without wearing his Vixx. That did it for me, and I ordered them the next day. Then days later there was an accident in our area involving a laceration caused by the racer's own ski edge. Message received - done deal - no buyer's remorse - my daughter loves them - great decision.

They are super flexible and can be used as the only base layer under the speed suit or whatever with absolutely no discomfort or limited flexibility/range of motion. With the right sizing one can fit a thin layer of poly pro or something underneath for added comfort.

Lastly, customer service has been amazing. I'm really impressed with these guys. Thanks!

More comfort than V1

This is the second pair I have bought for my ski racer son. Version 2.0 is much more comfortable. He is wearing men’s extra small. I’m very happy to have his legs protected in these. I am a trauma surgeon at a busy ski resort hospital. I see a lot of injuries from ski edges and I’m very grateful to have him protected.

The origin
We built VIX to stop ski edges before they reach your skin.

"I cut my thigh, through the muscular tissue, nerves, IT band, and nicked the femoral artery. I was losing blood ridiculously quickly."

Victor Wiacek — Founder. VIX was started after a near-fatal ski-edge laceration.

Read this before you race in VIX

The short version

VIX base layers are cut-resistant, not cut-proof. They are built and certified to make a ski edge far less likely to cut you, and they have turned cuts into bruises for a lot of racers. They cannot make skiing safe. Nothing can. Read the rest so you know exactly what you are wearing and what it can and can’t do.

What the protection is

Every VIX cut-resistant garment is tested under the FIS-DITF 2021 cut-resistance standard, the same standard FIS uses to decide what racers are allowed to wear. Our base layers hold the 5-star rating, the highest the scale goes, which means the fabric withstood 500 newtons of cutting force in every test direction. The FIS label sewn into your garment shows its rating. 76% of World Cup racers choose VIX.

The protective knit runs everywhere the garment covers you. There are no sewn-on panels and no seams for an edge to catch.

What it is not

  • It is not cut-proof. A sharp, freshly tuned edge, at the wrong angle and with enough force behind it, can cut through any fabric, including ours. Our garments lower the odds and the severity of a laceration; they do not remove the risk.
  • It does not protect what it doesn’t cover. Coverage runs from the hip (iliac crest) to the top of the ski boot. Your boot protects the lower leg. Anything outside that area, including the hands, arms, and neck, is unprotected.
  • It is not impact protection. VIX does nothing for fractures, blunt trauma, or crashes. It is a base layer, not armor.
  • It is not a substitute for judgment. Ski racing carries real risk with or without VIX. You accept that risk when you push out of the gate.

Your responsibilities

Protection only works when the garment is in good condition and worn correctly.

  • Wear it right. Directly against the skin, under your race suit, in your correct size. A loose garment can shift and leave skin exposed.
  • Leave the label alone. The FIS conformity label on the back of the lower left leg is what race officials check. Don’t remove it, cover it, or cut it out.
  • Inspect before every race day. Look for cuts, rips, snags, thinning, and worn patches, especially on the inner thigh and calf where edges land. Damage anywhere weakens protection everywhere near it.
  • Retire it when it’s been hit. If a ski edge has struck the garment and left a mark, the fibers in that spot have already done their job. Replace it. Any garment with a cut, a rip, or visible wear should be taken out of service.
  • Wash it the way the label says. Hand or machine wash at 30°C or cooler. Do not tumble dry; air-dry at room temperature. Cool iron only, and no steam. Heat and harsh treatment degrade the protective fibers over time and shorten the life of the garment.

The legal part

What we do stand behind

If someone gets cut

A femoral bleed can take a person’s life in minutes. Know where the nearest tourniquet is before you need it, apply it high and tight above the wound, and get help on the way immediately. Our founder is alive because the people around him acted fast. Please carry a tourniquet in your race bag, and if you coach, ask us for one; we give them to coaches for free.
