    Victor's story

    Built by a racer who nearly died from a ski cut.

    In 2019, Victor Wiacek fell on his own ski. The edge cut his thigh to the bone and nicked his femoral artery, and he lost about half his blood before tourniquets stopped it.

    When he was ready to race again, none of the cut-resistant leggings he could buy held up on the testing machine he built, so he made his own.

    387 fabric combinations and 29 testing machines later, the testing hasn't stopped, and he still never skis without them.

    Sizing & fit
    Measure your waist, hips and inseam, then match them to the . VIX should fit snug, not tight, with full range of motion. Between sizes? Size up: a slightly larger size still protects, and a size that's too small is one you won't want to wear. Youth Y fits most racers under 5′0″ with a 23 to 26″ waist; closer to 5′0″, try Women's or Men's XS. Wearing a knee brace? Brace shapes vary, so email us before you order. Size exchanges are free, and we ship the new size first.
    Is it legal for my races?
    Yes. From the 2026-27 season, every FIS Alpine race requires cut-resistant pants rated at least 3 stars under the FIS-DITF 2021 standard. VIX is rated 5 stars. Every pair carries the FIS conformity label on the back of the lower left leg, where officials check it, so leave it on. Below FIS level, rules vary by organizer and country.
    Will it feel scratchy?
    It can feel firmer when new. That's the protective fiber, and it softens after two or three washes. Washing it before the first wear helps, and some racers wear a thin base layer under it at first.
    How long does a pair last?
    Multiple seasons with the right care: cold wash, no fabric softener, air dry. Heat and softener damage the protective fibers. Retire a pair once it's cut, torn or visibly worn.

    Read this before you race in VIX

    The short version

    VIX base layers are cut-resistant, not cut-proof. They are built and certified to make a ski edge far less likely to cut you, and they have turned cuts into bruises for a lot of racers. They cannot make skiing safe. Nothing can. Read the rest so you know exactly what you are wearing and what it can and can’t do.

    What the protection is

    Every VIX cut-resistant garment is tested under the FIS-DITF 2021 cut-resistance standard, the same standard FIS uses to decide what racers are allowed to wear. Our base layers hold the 5-star rating, the highest the scale goes, which means the fabric withstood 500 newtons of cutting force in every test direction. The FIS label sewn into your garment shows its rating. 75% of World Cup racers chose VIX in 2025-26.

    The protective knit runs everywhere the garment covers you. There are no sewn-on panels.

    What it is not

    • It is not cut-proof. A sharp, freshly tuned edge, at the wrong angle and with enough force behind it, can cut through any fabric, including ours. Our garments lower the odds and the severity of a laceration; they do not remove the risk.
    • It does not protect what it doesn’t cover. Coverage runs from the hip (iliac crest) to the top of the ski boot. Your boot protects the lower leg. Anything outside that area, including the hands, arms, and neck, is unprotected.
    • It is not impact protection. VIX does nothing for fractures, blunt trauma, or crashes. It is a base layer, not armor.
    • It is not a substitute for judgment. Ski racing carries real risk with or without VIX. You accept that risk when you push out of the gate.

    Your responsibilities

    Protection only works when the garment is in good condition and worn correctly.

    • Wear it right. Directly against the skin, under your race suit, in your correct size. A loose garment can shift and leave skin exposed.
    • Leave the label alone. The FIS conformity label on the back of the lower left leg is what race officials check. Don’t remove it, cover it, or cut it out.
    • Inspect before every race day. Look for cuts, rips, snags, thinning, and worn patches, especially on the inner thigh and calf where edges land. Damage anywhere weakens protection everywhere near it.
    • Retire it when it’s been hit. If a ski edge has struck the garment and left a mark, the fibers in that spot have already done their job. Replace it. Any garment with a cut, a rip, or visible wear should be taken out of service.
    • Wash it the way the label says. Hand or machine wash at 30°C or cooler. Do not tumble dry; air-dry at room temperature. Cool iron only, and no steam. Heat and harsh treatment degrade the protective fibers over time and shorten the life of the garment.

You assume all risk of injury, loss, and damage, including death and damage to persons or property, arising from the use of our products.

    Except as stated in our published guarantee and warranty, VIX Protection LLC disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising from our products, whether in negligence, breach of warranty, or otherwise, is limited to the amount you paid for the garment.

    Nothing in this disclaimer limits any right you have under applicable law that cannot be limited by agreement.

    If someone gets cut

    A femoral bleed can take a person’s life in minutes. Know where the nearest tourniquet is before you need it, apply it high and tight above the wound, and get help on the way immediately. Our founder is alive because the people around him acted fast. Please carry a tourniquet in your race bag, and if you coach, ask us for one; we give them to coaches for free.
